Halloween stream ideas and game events for 2024

Enjoy special events, play new horror releases, and give your stream a macabre makeover!

Forget haunted houses and trick-or-treating. Stay indoors and live stream your favorite gory, ghastly and ghoulish games instead. Here’s our list of ideas for a fun Halloween gaming stream.

Special events are one of the best ways to boost viewership to any gaming streamer, which makes Halloween a great time for gamers! Gamers, audiences, and developers alike love the spooky season, which is why you’ll find online spaces jam-packed with special, time-limited events. In this blog, we’ll share some Halloween stream ideas, as well as tips, tricks, and treats for any gamer who wants to join the seasonal fun.

Play your favorite game’s Halloween event

No matter what game you play, there’s a high chance the devs have a special spooky event in store for you. For example, wildly popular battle-royale style Fortnite has run Fortnitemares since 2017, with exclusive skins, items, emotes, and quests that pay homage to horror cinema and pop culture.

Nintendo players won’t miss out either – with special decorations, maps, and missions appearing in fan favorites like Pokemon, Luigi’s Mansion, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and more! Even Grand Theft Auto Online is launching a month long Halloween mode – complete with hordes of zombies in a Community Challenge.

Live streaming your gameplay of a Halloween event is a great way to connect to the gaming community around the world. Audiences have plenty of time to build up excitement about what special skins, rewards, and gameplay will be unlocked with Halloween events. You can collaborate with other gamers, run your own special challenges, and ask your viewers if they’re joining in.

Get nostalgic with horror classics

Halloween is a great season for cracking out the classics from the horror genre – especially if you’re not usually a horror game player. Viewers love watching reactions on a live stream, since it helps them relate to you. And with the remastering of star-studded Until Dawn and the release of a Silent Hill 2 remake, horror game fans are eager to see modern players experience a refreshed version of their favorites.

The horror genre is full of options, from old school gore like Resident Evil, to well-established survival games like Five Nights at Freddy’s and Dead by Daylight. Thanks to their popularity, there’s usually no surprises in terms of plot or game mechanics, so you can focus on talking to your viewers and keeping them engaged.

Celebrate the underdog with indie horror games

While many viewers enjoy the burst of nostalgia you get by watching popular horror titles, audiences also find it fun to watch you explore the unique themes and creative gameplay offered by indie horror games. In fact, several indie studios have launched to viral success thanks to gaming streamers – including minimalist yet unsettling Limbo, and point-and-click adventure Fran Bow

Playing genuinely terrifying survival horror games like The Mortuary Assistant and Outlast, or nightmarish puzzle game Poppy Playtime can be a bit too scary for most solo players. Playing with an audience can help you feel braver – or at least experience solidarity when you scream at a jump scare.

For non-traditional gamers, there are plenty of indie games that flip horror tropes on their head, like Little Nightmares, which has become a fast favorite among horror game aficionados. Dredge is a single-player fishing adventure that combines cute design with cleverly-built tension. For 9-5’ers who need to blow off some steam, Yuppie Psycho is a wild, unpredictable ride.

Build buzz with highly anticipated releases

Nothing gets your viewers more excited than new games – and there’s been several very exciting releases planned for 2024. Here are just a few titles that can help attract more viewers and encourage audience engagement:

  • Slitterhead is the brainchild of Silent Hill’s director and creator, Keiichiro Toyama. In addition to body horror, this game promises some interesting gameplay with a ‘possession’ feature that allows you to jump from character to character.
  • Released in June 2024, Still Wakes the Deep is a narrative-led, atmospheric horror game set entirely in an oil rig in the North Sea. There’s already a vibrant online community discussing plot twists and turns that you can add your theories to.
  • Moving Houses is a cheerful physics-based redecorator sim with a horror twist that will keep audiences on the edge of their seats as you go deeper into the game.

The Casting of Frank Stone, released in September, expands the Dead by Daylight universe and combines the slightly meta trope of would-be horror movie crew with interesting branching storylines.

Add atmosphere with an eerie-sistible look

Celebrate the theme of the season and change up your look to match the occasion. You can add a few Halloween-themed graphics or filters to your profile picture, and use a special seasonal banner image. You can also think about decorating your usual setup with a few fake spiders, bats or cobwebs. Add a jack-o-lantern to your lighting, or alter your colors to purple, green, or red to fully immerse your viewers in the horror games you’re playing. Some streamers like to dress up for the occasion – so why not put on a cheap Halloween costume or dress up as one of the characters in your favorite horror game.
